The Pahoa is a second-generation canoe built by Tiger Canoe. The Pahoa originates from the Kamau built in 2002. The 2003 season provided enough feedback to know exactly what changes he needed to make to the Kamau. The end result changed the performance of the canoe so much that it needed a new name. The Pahoa, or “Dagger” proved to be a choice canoe this year and the years to come.

The consensus for the Kamau was that it needed less rocker in the tail. With less rocker, there would be more control in the surf. The change in the aft of the canoe started below the center of the hull. Instead of changing the deck, Tiger pulled the hull down to give the canoe a longer waterline. This also added buoyancy in the tail lifting the canoe early in the bump resulting in a quicker response with less effort. The state championship proved to be the ultimate testing grounds in the surf.

For a canoe that is fast in the surf, the Pahoa definitely holds its own in other conditions. Tiger felt that he could increase the hull speed of the Pahoa in flat water. Less rocker in the aft meant a longer waterline and a faster canoe. The Pahoa holds a straight course in the flat with little shifting or swaying of the tail.

After the Pahoa’s final modification, there was a noticeable difference in the balance of the hull and ama. This added bonus allows paddlers have the ability to rig the canoe as light as needed with a perfect balance.

The seat is comfortable so it allows me to relax while paddling. I can rig the ama as light as I want and the canoe is still stable.” click to see bigger pictureKekoa Bruhn: “The Pahoa is unreal. From surfing big bumps to gliding in flat water, I've never experienced a canoe that is so versatile. It takes my paddling to a higher level.  And the chicks dig it too!”

It allows me to easily get onto bumps and is extremely maneuverable allowing me to adjust my direction in rough conditions. The thing that sets the Pahoa apart from other great surfing canoes is that it runs unbelievably well in uphill and flat conditions. The Pahoa is going to be well suited for Aussie racing. click to see bigger pictureMike Judd: “The Pahoa is fun, simple, and competitive. Tiger placed emphasis on design and not fancy gadgets or unnecessary aesthetics. In the past eight years, I have never paddled the same canoe more than one season. I look forward to racing on the Pahoa next year.”

This is my seventh year paddling Tiger’s boats. He is a perfectionist and cares deeply about making his customers happy. The guy is up and up as far as builders go. Don’t know anybody with more integrity and more heart.” click to see bigger pictureSteve Cole: “The Pahoa is a canoe that you are comfortable on right from the start. It's a good feeling to be in a canoe that feels great and is also very fast in all conditions. What I really like is how responsive the Pahoa is in a following sea. Working with Tiger Canoe and Kayak has been a dream. They tell you how long it will take to build your canoe and they deliver.”
